In Animal Crossing New Horizons, there are several types of insect. But some are a little harder to catch than others. In this guide, we'll explain how to catch a tarantula.

  • Don't forget to donate your first tarantula to the museum. After that, it's a good idea to sell the insect, since tarantulas are worth 8,000 bells and whistles, which is a pretty hefty sum!

How to catch a tarantula

First of all, it's important to know that tarantulas are rare insects found in Animal Crossing: New Horizons during the evening hours, between 7:00 pm and 4:00 am, and between the months of November and April. Keep an eye out for the sound of their footsteps at night, so you'll know if there's one near you.

Once you've spotted a tarantula, it's important not to run or get too close to it, or it will bite you. If you approach a tarantula, it will look at you and raise its legs in alarm. If you approach it again in this state, it will lunge at you and attack.

Even if it's possible to catch it as it runs towards you, it's very possible that you'll miss it, stinging and knocking you unconscious, causing the tarantula to flee.

To catch a tarantula, approach slowly with your net in the air (hold down A). Try to stay out of its field of vision, so come up from behind. Repeat this process until you're close enough to drop the net on top.

How to catch several tarantulas?

There's actually a way to catch several tarantulas! Yes, they're worth a lot (8,000 bells!!!!), which means catching several is a good way to make quick bells. There's a mystery island where you can find several tarantulas or insects on that island DURING THE NIGHT. All you have to do is travel to several islands DURING THE NIGHT and hope to find it.

Once you've arrived on the tarantula-filled mystery island, you can create a barrier to prevent yourself from being stung. All you have to do is dig a number of diamond-shaped holes around you, so that when you spot a tarantula, you can easily step over them. This is where you'll attract the tarantulas.

As soon as you see a tarantula (or it sees you), it will chase you if you run, so let it run behind you and quickly return to your spot where you've dug several diamond-shaped holes.

The insects will frantically circle around to the other side of the holes, unable to reach you. From there, you can safely spread your net across the space and tear them off with ease!

What happens if I can't catch it and it stings me?

If a tarantula bites you, you'll faint, but you won't lose anything. You'll wake up in front of your house.
