8bitDo is a brand offering a wide range of products dedicated to modern video games with a retro design. Among these products, we decided to test the N30 Pro 2 Bluetooth controller.

This wireless controller embeds several features and can be used on PCs, Macs, Android, Nintendo Switch and even Linux.

The N30 Pro 2 is available in several colors, each strongly inspired by NES, Super Nintendo, Game Cube and Super Famicom controllers. It's flat, 2.5cm high and 7cm wide. It is more rounded on the sides than the Nintendo original.

8bitdo's controller features two joysticks, a directional cross, a start and select button, 4 action buttons as well as two right and two left buttons. All these buttons in such a compact controller have been added at the expense of ergonomics.

The A, B, X and Y buttons are relatively pleasant to use and don't get stuck. On the other hand, L2 and R2 are much more problematic to use, as they are located very close to the center of the joystick, and access to them is more difficult due to their proximity to L1 or L2.

The bottom of the controller consists of a Home, Capture and Sync button. These buttons are relatively difficult to access and won't really be usable when you want them to be.

The 8bitdo controller can be synchronized with up to four devices at the same time, thanks to different connection modes for PC/Mac/Nintento or Android. Buttons are mapped by pressing and holding A/B/X/Y with start.

The controller can also be used with the USB-C cable supplied on the various platforms supported. Autonomy is around 1h30 with a 480mA h battery.

The 8Bitdo N30 Pro 2 controller is a condensation of technology in a small space, providing access to all the functions of the various platforms supported. The design is perfect, and the feeling of holding a retro controller is very much present.

On the other hand, the retro design has been done to the detriment of ergonomics, and you won't get comfort comparable to more traditional controllers. This controller is ideal as an on-the-go companion, as it won't clutter you up and will allow you to play easily on mobile and switch. If you're on the move and want a discreet, easily accessible controller, we recommend it. For those who love retro, compromise isn't a major handicap, and for playing all the games of yesteryear you'll find what you're looking for.
