In this guide to Pokémon Scarlet / Violet, you'll find all the information you need to choose your Pokémon Starter, as well as the strategies you need to know to make the right choice.

All games in the Pokémon license will ask you to choose one Pokémon from the three on offer. The Pokémon you choose is known as a Starter Pokémon. This Pokémon will follow you throughout the adventure, and depending on which one you choose, the game will start more easily for you.

Which starter to choose in Pokémon Scarlet / Violet?

During the prologue, you'll have the chance to choose one of the 3 Pokémon listed above. To choose your first Pokémon in the game, you'll have to decide whether you're making a choice based on the Pokémon's visuals or a strategic choice for the rest of the adventure.

You should also be aware that other Pokémon you don't choose will no longer be available and cannot be captured in the rest of the adventure. You'll have to trade for them.

Visual choice

This choice is up to you, and is different for each player. The most important thing is to know the final form of the Pokémon that will accompany you throughout the game's adventure. Don't hesitate to consult our Pokédex to find out about all the evolutions of Paldea's Pokémon.

Strategic choice

The strategic choice is to choose a Pokémon with the strongest type compared to the type of Pokémon you'll encounter at the start of the game. This way, you'll have an easier level progression and a wider choice of Pokémon when you progress far enough into the game in areas where your Starter's type is weakest.

So, although Pokémon Scarlet / Violet is an open-world game, you'll encounter Rock and Ground-type Pokémon more often at the start of the game. Later on, you'll more often encounter Fire-type Pokémon. The best choice of Pokémon is Quaxly, which is of the Water type.
